TX Judges Set New Redistrict Lines

After the 2010 Census, Texas gained four congressional seats. The Republican controlled legislature drew new lines but minority groups filed suit claiming the new maps violated the Voting Rights Act.

A three-judge tribunal redrew new maps more favorable to Hispanics. The U.S. supreme Court vacated that map, concluding the tribunal did not pay enough deference to the legislature's map.

A federal court in San Antonio redrew the congressional districts yesterday, increasing the likelihood the state will be able to hold their primary elections on May 20.

Reaction to the new map split along party lines, with Republicans praising the revised districts as closer to those drawn by the legislature, and Democrats contending the new map short-changes minority voters.

Though the new map is likely to be used for the 2012 election, the state's long-term redistricting plans are still being considered by another federal court.
