Ukraine has used a Newly Developed Cruise Missile dubbed Flamingo for the First time. Ukraine unveiled the Flamingo last month, touting the Weapon as Kyiv's "most successful missile" and a "very powerful" Tool in the Country's Arsenal. The Cruise Missile is thought to have a Range of roughly 3,000 kilometers, or 1,860 miles.
Western-made Weapons provided to Kyiv have often come wrapped up in Restrictions around Striking Russian Soil, Designed to Assuage Fears about Escalating the War, but Domestically Manufactured Missiles don't have these Limitations. Footage circulating on Social Media, picked up by Ukrainian Media, purports to Show the Launch of what appears to be Three Flamingo Missiles at Sunrise on an Unspecified Date. The Location was not given.
Ukrainian Military Outlet, Militarnyi, Reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces struck Patrol Boats and an Outpost for Russia's FSB Security Service near Armiansk, Northern Crimea, on Saturday, with Flamingo Missiles. Russian Independent Outlet Astra earlier said Ukraine had Attacked close to the Village of Voloshyne, immediately West of Armiansk, with Long-Range Neptune Cruise Missiles.
It is "Plausible" the Footage could show the Flamingo, said Weapons and Technology Expert, David Hambling. "Rocket-assisted launch is the best way to get a jet-powered missile in flight so the jets can take over," Hambling said. Efrem Lukatsky, a Photojournalist with the Associated Press, Published an Image to Social Media in Mid-August described as showing Flamingo Missiles at a Factory in Ukraine.
Ukrainian Media reported the Missile, with a Warhead weighing in at over a ton, has a Flight time of roughly Four hours, with a maximum Speed in the Region of 950 kilometers per hour (nearly 560 mph) and a six-meter (20ft) Wingspan. The First iterations of the Missile ended up Pink after a Factory Error, earning its Nickname. Fire Point, the Ukrainian Company behind the Missile, is able to make One Flamingo a day, although the company hopes to Increase this Sevenfold by October, Iryna Terekh, the Defense Firm's Head of Production said.
"What we are really waiting to see is whether Ukraine can scale up production to the levels claimed—hundreds per month—and how successfully they can evade Russian air defenses and hit targets," Hambling said. "It's very much a matter of 'watch this space.'" Fire Point is being Investigated by Kyiv's Anti-Corruption Agency, NABU, over Concerns the Company misled the Government on Pricing and Deliveries, But that has Not been Verify yet.
Russia Annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, and has Controlled the Peninsula ever since, although its Grip on Crimea is Not Internationally Recognized. Both Sides have seen Crimea as Non-Negotiable in Ceasefire Talks, with Territorial Demands just one of the Issues on which Russia and Ukraine are still very Far Apart.
Russia said in Fall 2022 it was also Annexing Four Regions of Mainland Ukraine, including the Country's Industrial Heartland. It does Not fully Control these Regions. Ukraine's GUR Military Intelligence Agency said on Monday, Kyiv had Targeted a Russian Airbase Close to the City of Simferopol in Crimea, striking Two Mi-8 Helicopters. Russia's Astra Reported Ukrainian Drones had Attacked the Airport in Simferopol and "completely Destroyed" a Mi-8 Helicopter.
The Estimated Cost of Two Helicopters reaches up to $30 million, the GUR said, adding that a Russian Tugboat had been Struck in Sevastopol Bay. Taking out the Vessel "Significantly Limits the Combat Capabilities" of an Elite Russian Sabotage Force, the Agency went on.
Denys Shmyhal, who took over as Ukraine's Defense Minister in July, said the Flamingo was a "Very Powerful Weapon" but more Information would be made available "When the Time Comes."
