Common Cause was the first to file formal Legal Complaints with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Election Commission (FEC) alleging that the $130,000 hush Money Payment to Stormy Daniels was an Illegal, Unreported Campaign Contribution.
We have Laws in place to Protect the Integrity of our Democracy, but they only work if Violations are called out and Enforced.
That’s why Common Cause’s Role as a Government Watchdog, which they’ve played for nearly 50 years, is more important than ever today. Common Cause is working day in and day out for Accountability, and to uphold our Democracy.
We expect, and deserve, a Democracy where everyone plays by the same Rules. But Trump and his Campaign have demonstrated a remarkable disregard for our Election Laws, and Common Cause has been exposing them whenever they do.
Just this week, they filed their latest Official Complaint against Cambridge Analytica, an Overseas Data Firm with close Ties to Republicans, Trump, and Associates that Stole Data from Millions of Facebook Users. They alleged that Cambridge and its Leadership broke Laws against Foreign Nationals involvement in Election-Related Activities.
Their also calling out Trump’s Outside Spending Group for Illegally raising Money for his 2020 Re-Election Campaign, and a Complaint against Donald Trump Jr. potentially Illegal Contacts with Russian agents during the 2016 Election.
The fact is, in troubled times like these, our democracy needs Committed Nonpartisan Watchdogs like Common Cause to shine a light on those who Break our Laws and hold them Accountable. It’s long, drawn-out, work to uphold the Integrity of our Elections, but it’s never been more necessary than it is right now.
