Judge Valerie Caproni is expected to sentence former State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver on his Federal corruption conviction today.
Judge Caproni wants the feds to give her information about other State pols’ prison sentences. “It is hereby ordered that: The government include in its sentencing submission a summary chart containing the sentences imposed on elected state and federal officials who were convicted in federal court of corruption-related offenses in the last five years to the extent that information is not unduly burdensome to obtain,” Judge Caproni wrote in a decision released Thursday. She is consider sentencing submissions from the prosecution, defense and the probation department before handing down her sentence.
The 72-year-old was found guilty last year on seven counts including fraud, extortion and money laundering.
Last month, Silver publicly expressed remorse in a letter where he admitted that he let down the people of New York State and his Lower Manhattan constituents.
Another letter written by his wife revealed that he has prostate cancer.
But Silver's case could be hurt by recently unsealed court papers that say he had affairs with two women who allegedly benefited financially from his office.
Prosecutors are pushing for a prison sentence of at least 15 years.
UPDATE
He was sentenced to 12 years + 2 years probation, a fine of $1.75 million, and forfeit of $5.3 million in illegal gains.
