The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday rejected a bid, Veasey v Abbott, 15A999, to block a controversial Texas law that requires voters to show identification before voting, meaning it is likely to be in effect during this year's elections.
The court denied a request filed by opponents of the law, including individual Texas voters, who say the law is not needed and disproportionately affects older and poorer voters, including minorities, who are less likely to have identification papers.
The U.S. Supreme Court says if the Fifth Circuit doesn’t resolve this case by July 20, 2016, the plaintiffs should re-file with the U.S. Supreme Court.
UPDATE
The case is scheduled for an en banc rehearing by the 5th Circuit on May 23, 2016.
