The New York State Democratic Presidential Primary will be held on April 19, 2016 and will now no longer conflict with Passover.
This announcement follows a campaign by Assemblyman Sheldon Silver and Assemblyman Charles Lavine, President of the New York Chapter of the National Association of Jewish Legislators, to change the date and make the Presidential primary open and accessible to all voters.
Assemblyman Silver began the effort to change the date with Assemblyman Lavine who joined by pledging not to vote for an April 26th date. Legislation will soon be voted on to officially enact the new date.
The New York State Senate today passed legislation designating the date of April 19th for the 2016 presidential primary in New York. The bill (S5958) is sponsored by Senator Rich Funke (R-C-I, Fairport), Chairman of the Senate’s Election Committee, and protects the rights of military and overseas voters by giving them adequate time to receive ballots and vote in the election, while also preventing the election from taking place during the observance of Passover. The bill will be sent to the Assembly.
