Nigel Farage is to stay on as leader of the UK Independence Party after the party’s ruling board rejected his resignation.
Mr Farage quit as Ukip leader on Friday, delivering on a pledge to resign if he failed to be elected as an MP in South Thanet, Kent.
When asked by the Telegraph on Friday morning if he would resign as he had pledged, Mr Farage said: “Are you calling me a liar?"
Speaking after a meeting of the National Executive Committee, Steve Crowther, the party’s chairman, said: “As promised Nigel Farage tendered his official resignation as leader of UKIP to the NEC.
“This offer was unanimously rejected by the NEC members who produced overwhelmingly evidence that the UKIP membership did not want Nigel to go.
In addition, the NEC recognized that the referendum campaign has begun this week and they needed their best team to fight that campaign led by Nigel.
UKIP has won control of its first district council, Thanet in Kent, the area where Nigel Farage, failed to become an MP.
UKIP won 33 seats, Conservatives 18, Labour four, and independents one, with 29 seats were needed for a majority.
