A bill sponsored by Councilman Ben Kallos (D, CD5-Manhattan) will require 15 more city agencies like: the NYPD, FDNY, the Human Resources Administration, which handles welfare benefits, and the Department for the Aging, which runs senior centers, to have voter registration forms on hand at offices where they interact with the public.
With the new changes, almost every agency that regularly deals with the public will be required to sign up voters, Kallos said, noting declining voter turnout rates.
“Voting is down. Voter registration is often a hurdle to voting. This legislation will make sure that any time you’re interacting with government, you can get a voter registration form,” he said.
The bill would also require the agencies to mail in the registration forms to the Board of Elections, instead of having would-be voters send them in on their own.
