The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in McCutcheon v. FEC. They gutted a long-standing anti-bribery law that capped campaign donations at $123,000 per year.
The 5-4 ruling eliminated limits on how much money people can donate in total in one election season.
However, the decision left intact the current $5,200 limit, $2,600 for a primary election and another $2,600 for a general election, on how much an individual can give to any single candidate during a two-year election cycle.
The ruling means a wealthy liberal or conservative donor can give as much money as desired to federal election candidates across the country, as long as no candidate receives more than the $5,200 cap.
"Spending money on advertising, promoting ideas and supporting candidates is an exercise of our right to freedom of speech," McCutcheon told CNN on Wednesday after the ruling came out.
Represent.Us made a funny and informative video to explain today's crazy decision in terms anyone can relate to.
Today's ruling is like giving a 16-year-old (politicians, lobbyists and political cronies) the keys to the liquor cabinet and expecting them not to trash the place (America). It silences anyone who can’t write big campaign checks.
1. Over 430,000 people support bold anti-corruption reforms and a recent poll shows that 97% of Americans agree with these reforms.
2. Volunteers are organizing local events all over the country as part of the Money Out/Voters In coalition.

Free societies with fair and accountable government are not handed down from the top, they are built from the bottom up. Bottom up means you and me, and everyone we know and love. This country will continue its decline as long as money, not the best ideas, determines political outcomes.
I, for one, am not willing to sit quietly and let that happen.
