NYDLC MINORITY VOTING RIGHTS COMMITTEE

The New York Democratic Lawyers Council's Minority Voting Rights Committee has published its 2014 Agenda.

They are a coalition of lawyers and others dedicated to fostering universal participation and trust in the electoral process by ensuring that: all eligible persons can register to vote easily; all registered voters are able to vote simply, fairly, and without intimidation; all votes are counted; and all voting systems are open and reliable.

2014 Legislative Advocacy

Local Initiatives

• Voter Pre-Registration for 16 and 17-year-olds, which will automatically vest when they turn 18.

• Create a High School Civics Curriculum Component attached to Voter Pre-Registration Bill.

• Instant Run-off in NYC Primary Elections

• Move Election Day to the weekend

• Allow Non-Citizens to Vote

Statewide Initiatives

• Voter-Friendly Ballot Act (including ballot type face)

• Felon Disfranchisement Voting (including Parolee Voting)

• Early Voting

Congressional Initiatives

• Support Congressman Lewis and Senator Gillibrand’s Voters Rights Bill

• Section 4 and 5 of Voting Rights Act.  Re-instate Pre-clearance.

I realize these actions will help elect Democratic candidates.

But as an independent, many of these issues should be supported by all voters, not just in New York, but throughout the country.
