Democratic Presidential candidate and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will roll out a full plan this week detailing how she would work to stem the influence of big money in politics.
The plan goes beyond Clinton’s already stated support for a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision.
Clinton’s proposals:
- Promised to issue an executive order requiring all government contractors to disclose their campaign contributions, including outside groups that currently do not disclose donors.
- Advocate for the Securities and Exchange Commission to issue a rule requiring all publicly traded companies to disclose their political spending, including undisclosed outside spending, to their shareholders.
- Support for enacting a small donor matching system of public financing for Presidential and Congressional elections along the lines of legislation sponsored by Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) and Reps. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and David Price (D-N.C.).
- Press for the passage of disclosure legislation in Congress that would require nonprofits spending money on elections to reveal their donors.
- Appoint justices who would side with the court’s liberal faction on issues of campaign finance and voting rights.
But we all know that without a new Congress who believe in these ideas, nothing will happen. So we need to start at the State level to make disclosure the norm and a different method to pay for the political process.
