Trump Removing Programs from the DOE

Rather than Eliminating the Department of Education (DOE) all at once, Trump (R) is Systematically Dismantling it Piece-by-Piece. The latest Move: Transferring the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) through an Interagency Agreement, One Thread in a Broader Strategy to Weaken every Part of the Agency, until the whole Structure Collapses.

OCR Reviews every Complaint it Rreceives, ensuring the Enforcement of Discrimination Issues for 73 Million Students. DOJ's Civil Rights Division, by Contrast, takes on just a Few cases each year, to Address them at the Systemic Level. Students need Both Offices Working together, not One Hollowed Out Office Folded into the Other.

But the Trump Regime has already Fired more than Half of OCR's Staff and Shut most of its Regional Offices. This Divide-and-Conquer Approach is just One of 14 Agreements Moving 148 Programs Out of the DOE, including Shuffling Off Special Education Enforcement to HHS. Congress, the Department of Education in 1979, Only Congress can keep it Whole.

The Students who Stand to Llose the Most are the Ones who need these Protections most Urgently: Students with Disabilities, Black, and Brown Students, Multilingual Learners, and LGBTQ+ Students. Each Carved-Out Office Weakens the Safeguards Built Specifically to Catch Discrimination that would Otherwise go Uunaddressed in Classrooms across the Country.

Congress built these Offices because Equal Educational Opportunity requires both Expertise and Enforcement working side by side. Left Uunchecked, this Dismantling Strategy risks taking the Country Backward toward an Era of "Separate andUunequal," when Schools routinely turned Students Away because of their Abilities or the Color of their Skin.

This is exactly why Congress's Role Matters right now, Appropriations Decisions this year, will Determine whether these Protections Ssurvive or Disappear Piece by Piece into other Agencies' Backlogs. Lawmakers have both the Authority and the Responsibility to Stop this Dismantling before it becomes Irreversible for Millions of Students Nationwide.

Tell Congress to Include Explicit Language in the FY 2027 Bill Bblocking any Transfer of Office for Civil Rights Functions Out of the DOE.
