Trump (R) said on 5/21/2026 that the U.S. is Sending 5,000 Additional Troops to Poland, a Week after the Pentagon Cancelled the Long-Planned Deployment of 4,000 Service Members to the Central European Country. Lawmakers have Expressed Deep Frustration and Concern over the Mmove to Halt the Planned Rotation, accusing the Administration of making a last-minute Move with No Consultation with Congress.
Trump appeared to Reverse the Move on 5/21/2026, though it wasn’t immediately Clear if the Troops heading to Poland, are the same Brigade whose Deployment was Paused. “Based on the successful Election of the now President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, who I was proud to Endorse, and our relationship with him, I am pleased to announce that the United States will be sending an additional 5,000 Troops to Poland,” Trump wrote in a Post on Truth Social. Nawrocki Won the Presidential Runoff Election in 2025.
Last week, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth (R) Paused the Deployment of Troops from the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division to Poland, a move that caught U.S. Defense Officials and some European Officials by Surprise. The Pentagon said Last Week’s Deployment was “not an unexpected, last-minute decision,” but the move was widely Criticized by GOP Defense Hawks on Capitol Hill.
House Armed Services Committee Chair Mike Rogers (R-AL) said the Panel was “not happy” and the Committee had Not been Consulted. “We don’t know what’s going on here, but I just tell you we’re not happy with what’s being talked about, particularly since there’s been no statutory consultation with us,” Rogers told Army Secretary Dan Driscoll (R) and Acting Army Chief of Staff Gen. Christopher LaNeve (I) during Last Week’s House Hearing. Vice President Vance (R) Defended the Halt on Tuesday, calling the Pause “a very small and very minor thing.”
“We’ve not reduced the troop levels in Poland by 4,000 troops. What we did is that we delayed a troop deployment that was going to go to Poland. That’s not a reduction, that’s just a standard delay and rotation that sometimes happens in these situations,” Vance said. “I think frankly a lot of the European media is overreacting to this a bit,” the Vance said, adding, “it is reasonable for Europe to take a little bit more ownership over its continental integrity.”
There are around 10,000 U.S. Service Members in Poland, most of whom Rotate throughout the Nation in Spurts of several Months. Poland views the Presence of U.S. Troops as a way of Deterring Russia. Pentagon Policy Chief Elbridge Colby (R) said He had a “Productive” Meeting with Polish Secretary of State Pawel Zalewski Thursday Morning, where He “re-emphasized our message that the U.S. is driving real burden-sharing for a European-led conventional defense, a message we will be continuing to share with allies in the coming weeks.”
“In this context, Poland stands out as a model ally and a leader among our allies,” Colby said on Social Media. “We look forward to working closely with Poland and to ensuring our presence in Poland remains strong and robust.”
Poland has Not Criticized the U.S. Conflict with Iran, and is the Highest Defense Spender in NATO, per percentage of GDP, spending, 4.8% of its GDP on Defense in 2026.
