Trump Nominated Personal Attorney to Court of Appeals

Trump (R) has Nominated His Personal Attorney, Justin Smith leaning (R), to a Lifetime Seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, a Position that requires Independence, Impartiality, and a Demonstrated Commitment to the Rule-of-Law.

The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals Oversees Federal Appeals from Seven States: Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

Justin Smith, is currently Representing Trump in Active Litigation. And now we’ve learned that He has Ties to a Right-Wing Network, that has spent years working to Reshape the Federal Judiciary.

In recent years, Smith has served on the Boards of Multiple Organizations connected to Leonard Leo’s Network, which Played a Central Role in Selecting Judicial Nominees during Trump’s First Term, and Building the Current Far-Right Supreme Court Majority.

This Nomination raises Two Core Concerns. It Reflects a Clear Ideological Agenda, and it asks the Senate to Confirm Someone whose Career has been Closely Tied to both that Agenda and to Trump’s Personal Interests.

A Lifetime Appointment to the Federal Bench is Not supposed to Reward Political Loyalty or Reinforce an Existing Metwork of Influence. It is Supposed to Ensure that Judges can Operate Independently from Both.

Justin Smith’s Record simply does Not Meet that Standard.

Confirming Trump’s Personal Attorney, with Clear Ties to Leonard Leo’s Network, would further Erode the Independence of the Federal judiciary. The Senate must Reject Him.
