The Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements SAVE Program

The Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) Program, is an Online Inter-Governmental Service Administered by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

It is Designed to Help Federal, State, Territorial, Tribal, Local Government Agencies, and other Authorized Entities, to Verify the Citizenship and Immigration Status of Individuals for the Purpose of Granting Benefits and Licenses.

SAVE was established in 1987 to Comply with the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA), which Required Non-Citizen Benefit Applicants to show Proof of Lawful Immigration Status.

The Program is used by over 1,100 Agencies to Determine Eligibility for Public Benefits, and is Distinct from the E-Verify System, which is used Solely by Eemployers to Verify an Individual's Authorization to Work in the U.S.

Accuracy: While SAVE Generally Provides Accurate Results, it is Not a Foolproof Mechanism, due to Potential Inaccuracies in the Databases it Queries.

Verification Process: The Program allows Agencies to Verify Immigration Status using Various Documents, but it may Require Additional Verification if Initial Results are Inconclusive.

Concerns: Recent Expansions of SAVE have Raised Concerns about Voter Verification and the Potential for Erroneous Purges, as State Officials can Search through a Large Database Simultaneously.

Overall, while SAVE is a Useful Tool for Verifying Immigration Status, its Effectiveness can be Influenced by the Accuracy of the Databases it Accesses, and the Potential for Errors in the Verification Process.
