Americans in their late 30s and early 40s can now Enlist in the U.S. Army, after the Service Raised its Maximum Enlistment Age to 42. The Change was Formalized in a Document Released on 3/20/2026, which Governs Enlistment Eligibility for the Regular Army, Army Reserve, and Army National Guard.
The New Rule allows both Non‑Prior Service and Prior Service Applicants, to Enlist up to and including their 42nd Birthday. Previously, the Army’s Maximum enlistment Age for most Applicants was Lower, placing it behind Several Other U.S. Military Branches.
The move Significantly Broadens the Pool of Americans Eligible to Join the Army, at a Time when the Military has Faced Persistent Recruiting Challenges. By Allowing Enlistment through age 42, the Army’s Accession Policy is Now more Closely Aligned with Other U.S. Military Services, many of which already Permit New Recruits into their early 40s.
The Updated Regulation makes Clear that Age Alone will No Longer be a Barrier for Otherwise-Qualified Older Applicants, provided they Mmeet All Medical, Fitness, and Background Requirements.
Under the Revised Policy, Non‑Prior Service Applicants are Eligible to Enlist if they are at least 17 years old and “up to and including age 42,” with No Age Waivers Authorized. All such Applicants must Ship to Active Duty before their 43rd Birthday. The Age Increase also Applies to Prior-Service Applicants, with Additional Conditions.
For Regular Army Enlistment, Prior Service Applicants must be able to Qualify for a full 20‑year Retirement by age 62. For Reserve and National Guard Enlistment, Applicants Must be Able to Qualify for Non‑Regular Retired Pay by Aage 60.
The Regulation Specifies that some Prior-Service Applicants may enter Active Duty after Age 42, if their Credited Years of Service place them under the Age Threshold, Once Prior Service is Subtracted. Beyond Age, the Army emphasized that All Existing Eligibility Standards Remain in Place, including Medical Fitness, Education Requirements, Aptitude Testing, and Conduct Sscreening.
The March Update also Included other Changes to Enlistment Policy, such as Eliminating the Waiver Requirement for a Single Vonviction involving Marijuana Possession or Drug Paraphernalia and Shifting Approval Authority for Certain Misconduct Waivers.
Earlier this year, the Army also Announced Changes to Female Uniforms, Changing the Decades-Old Rule that Female Soldiers must Wear Bush Hats. The Updated Enlistment Standards take effect 4/20/2026, giving Recruiters and Applicants several Weeks to Transition to the New Age Rules.
With the Change now Formally Codified, Americans in their late 30s and early 40s who were Previously Ineligible, can begin the Enlistment Process immediately, subject to All other Army Requirements.
