The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is considering a Plan that could Open more than One Million Acres of Public Land in California, to Oil and Gas Drilling.
These Lands belong to All-of-us. They Protect Wildlife Habitat, Preserve Cultural Sites Sacred to Tribal Nations, and give Millions of People Access to Clean Air, Open Space, and Recreation. But now Federal Officials are considering Turning Vast Stretches of this Public Land into Industrial Drilling Zones.
This Proposal would Expand Oil and Gas Leasing, across Fragile Ecosystems and Increase Fracking, Drilling Infrastructure, Methane Pollution, and Habitat Destruction. Roads, Pipelines, Drilling Pads, and Waste Ppits, would Carve through lLndscapes that currently Support Wildlife, Outdoor Recreation, and Healthy Ecosystems.
And it is happening as part of a much Broader Political Agenda. Trump (R) and His Allies have spent years trying to turn America’s Public Lands into a Playground for Fossil Fuel Corporations. Right now, the BLM is Accepting Public Comments on this Proposal, and Public Pressure can make the Difference between Protecting these Lands, or Opening them to Drilling. Tell the Bureau of Land Management to Reject Plans to Open California Public Lands to Oil and Gas Drilling.
This is Not the First Time Trump has tried to Hand Public Lands over to Oil and Gas Companies. During His First Administration, He carried out the Largest Rollback of Protected Public Lands in U.S. History by Slashing nearly Two Million Acres from Bears Ears and Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monuments in Utah. Those Cuts Reopened Protected Landscapes to Drilling, Mining, and Industrial Development.
His Administration also Pushed Massive Expansion of Oil and Gas Leasing across Federal Lands, Fast-Tracked Drilling Permits, Weakened Environmental Reviews, and Rolled back Methane Pollution Rules that Limited Venting and Flaring from Oil Wells. These Policies Dramatically Increased Fossil Fuel Extraction on Lands that Belong to the Public.
Trump even Attempted to Open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to Drilling, Threatening Polar Bears, Caribou Herds, and One of the Most Fragile Ecosystems on Earth.
Now the Same Strategy is Back. Opening more than a million Acres in California, to Oil and Gas Development would Mean more Pollution, more Climate Damage, and more Destruction of Landscapes that should be Protected for Future Generations.
