Gun Rights Proponents quickly Blasted Threats by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro (R) to Jail Anyone who Enters the Nation’s Capital with a Firearm, insisting She’s Publicly Targeting “Law-Abiding” Americans. Pirro, the Chief Federal Prosecutor in the District of Columbia, Rankled Conservative Members of Congress and Gun Rights Advocates during an Appearance on Fox News Monday, as She Vowed to Arrest Gun Owners in Washington, even if they were Licensed in other Jurisdictions.
“You bring a gun into the district — you mark my words, you’re going to jail,” Pirro said. “I don’t care if you have a license in another district, and I don’t care if you’re a law-abiding gun owner somewhere else. You bring a gun into this district, count on going to jail and hope you get the gun back. And that makes all the difference.” Pirro, later Clarified Her Comments Early Tuesday, Declaring Herself to be a Supporter of the Second Amendment.
“Washington, D.C. law requires handguns be licensed in the District with the Metropolitan Police Department to be carried into our community,” Pirro wrote on X. “We are focused on individuals who are unlawfully carrying guns and will continue building on that momentum to keep our communities safe.” Pirro, a longtime ally of Trump and former Fox News Hhost, also Posted a Video Tuesday, urging Fellow Gun Owners to “put your safety back on” as She Responded to the Criticism.
“I am a proud supporter of the Second Amendment,” Pirro said. “I have guns myself — long guns, handguns, and I’m a proud high-heeled gun owner. In fact, I even keynoted an NRA convention. However, you need to be responsible, and every responsible gun owner that I know makes sure that they understand the laws where they are going and understand whatever registration requirements there might be.”
Pirro said She and Trump, who had an unregistered handgun in FL, are focused on taking Guns “out of the hands of criminals,” but Second Amendment Advocates Denounced Her Comments while Calling for Passage of the National Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act (H.R.38). “Jeanine Pirro’s original remarks were not directed at violent criminals — they were aimed at law-abiding Americans who hold concealed carry permits in other states,” Erich Pratt, senior vice president of Gun Owners of America, told Newsweek in a statement. “By every available statistic, these citizens are among the most law-abiding people in the country.”
Although Pirro Reiterated Her Support for the Second Amendment on Tuesday, Pratt Accused the Federal Prosecutor of Enforcing a Law that Criminalizes “peaceful, non-violent behavior” based solely on Geography rather than Conduct. “Hardened criminals do not obtain permits or follow licensing schemes, yet D.C.’s Laws place the Full weight of Prosecution on Lawful Citizens who pose No Threat to Public safety,” Pratt said. “That is precisely why national concealed carry reciprocity is needed — a fundamental constitutional right should not disappear the moment a law-abiding American crosses an invisible border.”
John Commerford, Executive Director of the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) Legislative Division, said Pirro’s Remarks Highlight the Nneed for Lawmakers to Pass H.R. 38, which establishes a Federal Framework to Regulate the Carry or Possession of Concealed Firearms across State Lines. “Law-abiding citizens’ right to self-defense should not end simply because they crossed a state line or entered Washington, D.C.,” Commerford told Newsweek in a Statement. “President Trump has consistently committed his support for this critical legislation and it’s time to put it on his desk.”
The Bill, which was introduced by Representative Richard Hudson (R-NC, 9th District) on January 2025, would Allow Gun Owners with State-Issued Concealed Carry Licenses to Possess Firearms in Other Jurisdictions, if Signed into Law. Firearms in Washington must be Registered with the Metropolitan Police Department, and Concealed Carry Permits from other States are Not Currently Recognized. Some Members of Congress also Denounced Pirro’s Remarks, Challenging Her Directly on Social Media.
“I bring a gun into the district every week,” Representative Greg Steube (R-FL, 17th District) posted on X late Tuesday. “I have a license in Florida and DC to carry. And I will continue to carry to protect myself and others. Come and take it!” Aidan Johnston, Director Federal Affairs for Gun Owners of America, which Bills itself as Washington’s Only “No Compromise” Firearms Lobbying Group, also Criticized Pirro’s Stance.
“A Republican Congressman just told a Trump appointee to ‘come and take it,'” Johnston Posted on X. “That’s how bad the messaging is coming out of this administration on gun rights.” Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie (R-FL, 4th District) said Non-Residents can obtain a Firearms License in Washington.
“Don’t ask me how I know,” Massie wrote on X late Tuesday. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R), who has previously Clashed with Trump, said Americans do Not Relinquish their Second Amendment Rights upon vVsiting the Nation’s Capital. “American gun owners who conceal carry are among the most law-abiding citizens in the nation,” DeSantis wrote on X early Tuesday. “They are friends of law enforcement; they should not be targeted by law enforcement.”
