Trump (R) on Friday, Nominated Economist Brett Matsumoto (R) to be Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), months after He Fired the previous Agency Head over Substantial Revisions to past Jobs Reports.
“For many years, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, under WEAK and STUPID people, has been FAILING American Businesses, Policymakers, and Families by releasing VERY inaccurate numbers,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “That is why I FIRED the former Commissioner, and am pleased to nominate the very talented Brett Matsumoto as the next Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).”
“Brett was a Supervisory Research Economist for the BLS, but is now serving as a Senior Economist on the Trump Council of Economic Advisers, like he did in my First Term,” Trump wrote. “I am confident that Brett has the expertise to QUICKLY fix the long history of issues at the BLS on behalf of the American People. Brett Matsumoto is a Brilliant, Reputable, and Trusted Economist who will restore GREATNESS to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.”
Matsumoto is a Senior Economist with the White House’s Council of Economic Advisors and, “and on leave as a research economist at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics” focused on Economic Measurement, according to the White House’s website.
If Confirmed by the Senate, Matsumoto would Replace Acting Commissioner William Wiatrowski, who took over for former Commissioner Erika McEntarfer, an Appointee of former President Biden (D).
Trump fired McEntarfer in August, after the Release of a Poor Jobs Report. The Report showed a Significant Decline between May and June 2025, after Trump Returned to the White House, showing the U.S. added 258,000 Fewer Jobs than what was initially Reported.
“She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified,” Trump wrote on Truth Social at the time. “Important numbers like this must be fair and accurate, they can’t be manipulated for political purposes.”
McEntarfer said a month later while Speaking at Her alma mater, Bard College, that the Day of her Firing “was quite a day, to say the least.” She learned She was Fired, when a Reporter reached out to Her for Comment about Trump’s Truth SocialPpost.
She Defended BLS and Warned against Political Interference at the Bureau, calling Her Firing “an attack on the independence of an institution arguably as important as the Federal Reserve for economic stability. Messing with economic data is like messing with the traffic lights and turning the sensors off. Cars don’t know where to go, traffic backs up at intersections.”
Trump previously Nominated E.J. Antoni (R), a Top Economist for The Heritage Foundation and a Fox News Commentator, to lead BLS weeks after Firing McEntarfer. Facing Criticism from Democrats and after CNN’s KFile found that Antoni ran a Since-Deleted Social Media Account that made Inflammatory Posts about Gay People and Trump Critics, Trump Withdrew His Nomination.
