NM Passes Semi-Open Primaries

As 2025 comes to a Close, we're Celebrating One of the year's Biggest Wins in Primary Election Reform. New Mexico Opening their Primary Elections to Indepedent Voters.

A Semi-Open Primary, is a Type of Primary Election that Allows Independent Voters to Choose to Vote in either the Democratic or Republican Primary, while Voters who are Registered with a Specific Party, can Only Vote in their Own Party's Primary. This means that Independent Voters have the Flexibility to Participate in either Party's Primary, without being Officially Affiliated with that Party.

The Bill was Signed into Law Monday by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D).

New Mexico’s Shift to Partially Open Primaries, takes Effect in time for the 2026 Cycle, when Parties Nominate Candidates for Three Congressional Seats, One U.S. Senate Seat, and a Long List of Statewide Offices, including Governor, as Lujan Grisham Terms-Out of Office. Seats in the Democrat-led State House also will be up for Election.

This Victory is part of a Growing Movement. From Coast to Coast, Independent Voters are making Real Progress toward Open Pimaries.

Statewide, about 23% of Registered Voters forgo Partisan Affiliation, and were Locked-Out of the Primary Nomination Process. The Change still Prohibits Crossover Voting by Members of Opposing Parties.

Last year, Voters in: Arizona, Colorado, South Dakota, Idaho, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, and Oregon, All Rejected either Ranked Choice Voting, Open Primaries, or a combination of Both.
