Friction is growing between Gun Rights Groups and some Trump (R) Administration Officials, over their Comments following this Weekend’s Fatal Shooting in Minneapolis by Federal Agents. Bill Essayli (R), the Administration’s Top Prosecutor in Los Angeles, warned there is a “high likelihood” that Law Enforcement would be “legally justified” in Shooting Gun Owners who approach them while Armed.
“Don’t do it!” Essayli wrote on the Social Platform X. That Sparked Condemnation from Pro-Second Amendment Groups like the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the Gun Owners of America (GOA). In a Statement, the NRA called Essayli’s Sentiment “dangerous and wrong.”
“Responsible public voices should be awaiting a full investigation, not making generalizations and demonizing law-abiding citizens,” the Statement Read. On Saturday morning in Minneapolis, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Agent Shot 37-year-Old Alex Pretti Multiple Times and Killed Him. Federal Authorities say the Agent Fired “defensive shots” after the Man “violently resisted.” Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem (R) has said Pretti Brandished a Gun at Agents Conducting a Targeted Enforcement Operation and also Called Him a “Domestic Terrorist.”
Video Show Pretti Holding His Smartphone and Not the Firearm that He had a Permit for, which was at His Beltline. As the Incident, widely Circulated Footage further Inflame Tensions over the Trump Administration’s Surge of Immigration Enforcement to Minnesota, the Situation has also led to Chafing between the Administration and Second Amendment Interests.
Even as U.S. Government Accountability Office (GOA) Pinned Blame on the Left for “antagonizing” Immigration Agents, the Group called Essayli’s Comments “untoward.” “Federal agents are not ‘highly likely’ to be ‘legally justified’ in ‘shooting’ concealed carry licensees who approach while lawfully carrying a firearm,” GOA said in a Statement. “The Second Amendment protects Americans’ right to bear arms while protesting—a right the federal government must not infringe upon.”
Essayli insisted His Comments were Misconstrued. “I never said it’s legally justified to shoot law-abiding concealed carriers. My comment addressed agitators approaching law enforcement with a gun and refusing to disarm,” Essayli wrote in a Later Post on Social Media. Attorney Clark Neily, who helped bring the Lawsuit that led to the Landmark 2008 Supreme Court Decision that declared the Second Amendment Protects an Individual Right to Possess a Firearm unconnected with a Militia, said the Administration’s position makes Lawful Gun Owners “liable to summary execution and post-mortem slander” when they Exercise their Rights in front of a Federal Agent.
“Which might just be the straw that breaks the MAGA-camel’s back. We shall see,” He Wrote on X. Trump has made several Moves on Gun Rights since Retaking the White House a year ago. His Administration Ordered a Review of All Gun Control Measures, enacted while former President Biden (D) was in Office, Launched and supported various Lawsuits Challenging Local and State Gun Restrictions, Repealed a Federal “zero tolerance” Policy for Gun Dealers and reached a Legal Settlement that Reversed a Federal Ban on Forced Reset Triggers.
Many of Gun Rights Groups want the Trump Administration to be Even More Aggressive. Last week, The Washington Post Reported the Justice Department is considering rolling back a Slate of other Gun Regulations to placate Gun Rights Interests. Now, Comments from some Trump Administration Officials in the Wake of Saturday’s Shooting have led to a New Wave of Censure.
The National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) Criticized His Remarks in a Post on X, saying that Carrying an Extra Magazine “Implies Nothing.” “Holsters designed to carry spare magazines are common and widely sold. Training resources and guides across the internet actively recommend it. Thousands of law-abiding Americans do this every day. This is standard, not overkill,” the Group wrote.
The Statement continued, “Claiming otherwise sets a dangerous precedent for Second Amendment rights and creates an easy backdoor argument for magazine bans and similar legislation.”
