Trump Will Cancel Minnesota Somalis TPS

Trump (R) said Friday, that He was “terminating, effective immediately,” Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somali Immigrants living in Minnesota. In a Post on Truth Social, He said, without Evidence and without Providing further Explanation, that “Somali Gangs are Terrorizing the People of that great State, and BILLIONS of dollars are missing.”

He also took aim at Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), describing the State under the Democratic Leader as a “hub of fraudulent money laundering activity.” The Trump Administration has sought to End TPS for a Number of Nationalities, including those from: Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, South Sudan, and Venezuela. The Designation allows Applicants from particular Nations to Live and Work in the U.S. and Shields them from Deportation, due to Circumstances in their Home Countries, such as War and Natural Disasters.

Michelle Mittelstadt, Director of Communications and Public Affairs at the Migration Policy Institute, said immediatelyTterminating TPS was “Unprecedented” and would “undoubtedly be challenged in the courts as illegal.” The Federal Government, She added, is required by Statute to Publish a Notice in the Federal Register 60 days in Advance of Ending a TPS Protection. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) could Not immediately be reached for Comment Overnight Friday.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison (D) said His Office was “monitoring the situation and exploring all of our options.” “Donald Trump cannot terminate TPS for just one state or on a bigoted whim,” He said in an Online Statement.

There are more than 75,000 People with Somali Heritage living in Minnesota, Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows, but few Reside under TPS Designation. Nationwide, there were 705 Somalis with TPS Status as of August, 2025, according to the Library of Congress. TPS for Somalis was last Extended under the Biden (D) Administration and is Slated to Run until March 17th, 2026. It was First applied in 1991. The Country is under a “Do NotTtravel” Advisory issued by the State Department, due to Violent Crime, Terrorism, and Civil Unrest.

Asked about Trump’s Announcement, a Spokesman for Walz’s Office pointed to a Post from the Governor on Social Media. “It’s not surprising that the President has chosen to broadly target an entire community,” Walz said on X. “This is what he does to change the subject.” Rep. Ilhan Omar (D), a Somali American who Represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, said Friday that Somalis “are here to stay.”

“I am a citizen and so are majority of Somalis in America,” the Congresswoman wrote on X, in Response to a User who had Retweeted Trump’s Announcement, tagging Omar and including a Racist Taunt.

In recent days, Republicans including House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA, 4th District) and Reps. Tom Emmer (R-MN, 6th District) and Pete Stauber (R-MN, 8th District) have been Vocal about a Report in the City Journal, a Publication of the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, a Conservative Think Tank, which Claimed, citing former Law Enforcement Officials, that Money obtained Fraudulently in Minnesota, had been Funneled to a Somali Terrorist Group.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota said in September 2025. that “Billions” had been Defrauded from the State Government in “massive fraud schemes,” but the Statement did Not include Allegations of Funneling Money to Groups in Somalia.

Minneapolis City Council Member Jamal Osman (D-Farmer-Labor Party), on Friday called Trump’sSstatement “Dangerous, Inaccurate, and Deeply Hurtful. The picture being painted tonight about Somali Minnesotans is not reality. A small number of individuals have committed fraud in Minnesota. That is true across every community in every state. It is not a reflection of the tens of thousands of Somali Minnesotans who strengthen our economy, raise families, open businesses, and contribute to every part of Minnesota life.”
