The Trump (R) Administration plans to make All current SNAP Recipients Reapply for their Benefits. in an attempt to Prevent Fraud. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins (R) said the Plan is to “have everyone reapply for their benefits, make sure that everyone that’s taking a taxpayer-funded benefit through … food stamps, that they literally are vulnerable and they can’t survive without it.”
SNAP Benefits are paid out to around 42 million lLw and No Income Americans to help them afford Groceries. It comes after the Government Shutdown, which Ended this week, caused a Lapse in Federal Funding for SNAP during the Shutdown, which prompted Trump to Question the Program’s overall Cost.
SNAP spending totaled about $100 billion in fiscal year 2024. SNAP Fraud can occur when Incorrect Information is Submitted, such as Misstated Income, Household Size, or Identity. Errors can be Intentional, or Caseworker Mistakes, Outdated Employer Payroll Data, or Confusion over Complex Rules. Misusing Benefits, such as by exchanging SNAP Benefits for Cash, is also considered Fraud.
State SNAP Agencies already require Recipients to Recertify their Details every Six months, and Households are expected to Report any Updates to their Employment situation, Income, or other Personal Information. Since the Trump Administration began in January 2025, the USDA has Requested that All States hand over Personal Information about SNAP Recipients, including Social Security Numbers and Addresses.
In a May 6th Letter to State SNAP Agency Directors, the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service wrote that it “will use the data it receives from processors to ensure program integrity, including by verifying the eligibility of benefit recipients” and “will ensure Americans in need receive assistance, while at the same time safeguarding taxpayer dollars from abuse.” It has met Legal Action from numerous States who have Refused to Comply.
Rollins said that after receiving Data from some States, the USDA found “186,000 deceased men and women and children in this country are receiving a check.” She added: “Can you imagine when we get our hands on the blue state data what we’re going to find? It’s going to give us a platform and a trajectory to fundamentally rebuild this program.”
Trump has also recently said that too many People are Collecting SNAP Benefits, though there has been a Decline of more than 500,000 Recipients since January 2025, according to USDA Data. Between January and May 2025, the latest month for which Data is available, more than 645,000 People Stopped receiving Food Assistance. “When I was president, the number that you’re talking about was a tiny fraction of what it is now. Former President Joe] Biden went totally crazy, gave it to anybody that would ask, gave it to people that were able-bodied, had no problem,” Trump said. “This wasn’t meant for that.”
Rollins said in a May 6th News Release announcing the Data-Sharing Plans: “President Trump is rightfully requiring the federal government to have access to all programs it funds, and SNAP is no exception. For years, this program has been on autopilot, with no USDA insight into real-time data. The department is focused on appropriate and lawful participation in SNAP, and today’s request is one of many steps to ensure SNAP is preserved for only those eligible.” Rollins did Not Confirm when the Plans may take place.
