Poland Picks World’s First 5th-Gen Submarine

Poland has Selected the Swedish Government’s Offer of Saab’s A26 Submarines, to Replace its Existing Soviet-era Kilo-Class Vessel. The Swedish offer consisted of Advanced A26 Submarines from Saab, which are equipped with the Latest Innovations and Technologies. The Proposal also included Terms for Cooperation with Polish Industries and for Technology Transfer, to Secure a Strategic Partnership between the Two NATO Allies. Sweden and Saab have Clinched the Offer by Outpacing South Korea and Hanwha Ocean.

According to a Chosun Report, Korea had even offered to Transfer an Active-Duty Submarine at No Cost as part of the Bid. However, the Entry Bbarrier posed by the NATO Alliance proved Tough for the Korean Side. According to Reports, Poland intends to Sign the Contract with Saab by the Middle of 2026. It intends to get the First Submarine delivered to its Navy by 2030.

The Total Contract Value is expected to be around 10 billion zlotys ($2.74 billion); however, Experts believe it could reach 36 billion zlotys ($9.8 billion). Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, announced Saab’s Selection of the A26 Under the Orka Program. As announced, Poland will acquire Three New-Generation A26 Submarines.

“Poland will acquire three submarines under the Orka program. This decision creates a new security architecture in the Baltic Sea. After analyzing the responses of individual countries, the team recommended Sweden as the top choice,” the Deputy Prime Minister said during a Press Conference on Wednesday. Saab stated that it has yet to Sign a Contract or Receive an Order for the Submarines, but it will follow the Next Steps in the Procurement Process together with the Polish Authorities.

World’s First Fifth-Generation Underwater Vessel. Saab has called the A26 Blekinge-Class Vessel selected by Poland, theWworld’s First Fifth-Generation Submarine. It says that the Stealth-Focused Vessel is Designed to meet NATO’s evolving Requirements for Multi-Domain Operations.

Originally intended for the Swedish Navy, the Vessel is Aligned with NATO’s Interoperability Standards. It is Designed to Carry Out Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR), as well as Long-Range Precision Strikes and Seabed Warfare. The Patented Stirling Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) System will allow the A26 to remain Submerged for Extended Periods without Surfacing, ensuring near Total Invisibility.

The Company also says that the Fifth-Gen Submarine can gather Intelligence on Enemy Communications, Movements, and Radar Emissions in both Shallow Coastal Waters and Open Oceans. The A26 can Deploy Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) and Special Forces Directly from its Modular Payload Bays. This will Allow the Commanders to Monitor the Seabed, Secure Cables, Maritime Checkpoints, and Control Lines of Communication.

The Vessel can Carry Long-Range Precision Torpedoes and Cruise Missiles, giving it Credible Strike Capability against both Sea and Land Targets.

Moreover, the Fifth-Gen Submarine also has an Electronic Surveillance Suite that can Intercept and Classify Enemy Signals Passively, Feeding Data into NATO’s Broader Intelligence Networks. The A26 is Designed to operate as Part of NATO’s Integrated Multi-Domain Operations (MDO) Framework, in which Air, Land, Sea, Cyber, and Space Forces share Intelligence and Coordinate Actions in Real Time.

Although the ExactWweight and Dimensions of the Submarine are yet to be Specified, the Blekinge-Class Vessel is expected to Displace roughly 2,000 tons when Submerged.
