Judge Delivers Major Blow to Trump’s Security Grant Cuts

Democratic-led States including: California, Connecticut, and New York, have Secured a Temporary Restraining Order from U.S. District Judge Mary S. McElroy. The Order Targets $233 million in proposed Cuts to Counterterrorism and Emergency Preparedness Grants, with Plaintiffs Arguing the Reductions are Politically Driven. The Ruling Safeguards Funding for 12 States and D.C. while the Case proceeds.

The Case Challenges Federal Funding Cuts, with Plaintiffs Arguing they could Hinder Disaster response. They noted that Prior Administrations Distributed the Funds DFairly.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta (D) said Restoring the Funds is essential for Community Safety, calling the Cuts Baseless and Harmful. The Order preserves Key Grants to Support Public Safety Programs threatened by the Changes.

Bonta said, "Over and over, the courts have stopped the Trump Administration's illegal efforts to tie unrelated grant funding to state policies." Bonta added, "It’s a little thing called state sovereignty, but given the President’s propensity to violate the Constitution, it’s unsurprising that he’s unfamiliar with it."

Bonta stated, "California uses the grant funding at stake in our lawsuit to protect the safety of our communities from acts of terrorism and other disasters — meaning the stakes are quite literally life and death."

McElroy’s Ruling Questioned Executive Authority over Federal Funding, especially tied to State Immigration Compliance. Bonta said, "This is not something to play politics with. I’m grateful to the court for seeing the urgency of this dangerous diversion of homeland security funding."
