On September 25th, the Ukrainian Air Force announced that it Shot Down a Russian Su-34 Fighter-Bomber in the Zaporizhzhia Region. However, very few Details were Reported. The Russian Fighter-Bomber Jet was Shot Down early in the Morning, on the same day as the Announcement at approximately 4:00 am, according to a Report from Militarnyi.
The Ukrainian Air Force reportedly claimed that the Su-34 was using Glide Bombs in an Attack on the City of Zaporizhzhia. How the Jet was Shot Down still remains a mystery. No details were provided about what happened to the Crew of the Su-34. However, this wasn’t the First time that a High-Profile Russian Fighter Jet’s Destruction has been Announced by Ukrainian Authorities.
In August 2024, Ukrainian Forces achieved a Major Win over Moscow, after an Su-34 was Shot Down in the Russian Region of Kursk. It was a Big Victory at the time, and One praised by Ukraine's General Staff. The Su-34 'Fullback' is a Fighter-Bomber plane that began its Development in the Soviet Union in the 1990s. It has been used Extensively by Russia in Ukraine, since Moscow Invaded in February 2022.
The Ukrainian General Staff reported at the time that, “work to eliminate the occupiers, their equipment, and weaponry continues relentlessly. Together, we will win,” according to a translation from the Kyiv Post. Video footage of the Russian jet’s destruction circulated on Social Media, but it only showed a Large Explosion happening far off in the distance, and in the Dead-of-Night. So the Downing couldn't be Cconfirmed.
The News was rather Important, since the Loss of a Su-34 Fighter Bomber in Kursk, would have Proven to be an Expensive Blow to the Kremlin, at a time when Russian Forces were working to Push Back the Ukrainian Incursion into the Region that had begun earlier in the month. The Sukhoi Su-34 Fullback is One of the most Efficient Fighter Bombers that Moscow has in its Air Fleet, according to Business Insider, and it Costs upwards of $36 million dollars. The National Interest reported that the Su-34 is widely considered One of Russia’s most Advanced Warplanes, and that the Russian Jet is Classified as a Fighter-Bomber.
According to the Kyiv Post, the Su-34 was originally Designed for what the News Outlet called “tactical and strategic bombing missions,” and as such, it can be equipped with several types of Weapons. The Su-34 can carry Air-to-Ground Missiles, such as the Russian X-31 and X-59, as well as Fragmentation Bombs, High-Explosive Bombs, and Guided Bombs like the KAB-500.
As a Fighter-Bomber, the Su-34 was designed to take on a Wide variety of different Ground Targets and can Strike at Military Equipment, Personnel, Infrastructure, Buildings, and Bridges. David Axe of Forbes called the Su-34 Moscow’s Best Fighter-Bomber, but He also pointed out that the Aircraft was the Only type of Fighter-Bomber Jet the Russian Air Force had in its Fleet. Axe noted that a “combination of sensors, avionics, and smart weaponry” allows the Su-34 “to detect and attack pop-up targets on short notice.”
The Kyiv Post reported that the Su-34 has Electronic Warfare Systems in place, to Protect the Jet “against missiles and air defense systems.” But this hasn’t Stopped the Fighter Bombers from being Shot Down throughout the Russian Invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine has Destroyed several Su-34s throughout the Invasion, according to Business Insider, which noted that Kyiv claimed it Shot down 4 in One Week in February 2024, amid a Kill streak that the Outlet Reported saw Ten Russian Jets Destroyed in Ten days.
The Open-Source Dutch Intelligence group Oryx, has been counting Verifiable Losses of Russian and Ukrainian Equipment via Photo and Video Evidence since the War began, and as of September 25th, the Firm noted Russia has Lost 39 Su-34 Jets and a Single Su-34M, since February 2022.
