Senate Rejects Dueling Funding Bills as Shutdown Looms


The Senate on Friday, Threw a Wrench in the GOP’s Plans to Avert a Shutdown, Blocking a House-Passed Stopgap Measure, that would Fund the Government through Nov. 21st. Republicans also Defeated an Alternative Proposal, Continuing Resolution (CR), that would have Moved the Deadline to Oct. 31st. Democrats vowed to Vote against the Funding Bill, demanding Restoration of Medicaid Support and action to Extend Subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that are set to Expire at the End of the year.

House Speaker Johnson (R-LA, 4th District) on Thursday, floated a Plan to leave Town until after the Shutdown Deadline that would jam Senate Democrats. Also Friday, the House Passed a Resolution Honoring Slain Conservative Activist Charlie Kirk. While the 310-58 Vote was largely Bipartisan, it also appeared to prove Difficult for Democrats. Thirty-Eight Democrats Voted “Present” and 58 Voted “No”.

Two Republicans Voted against the House-passed CR: Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), an Outspoken Fiscal Hawk, who Argued it would Prolong Biden (D) era Spending Levels, and Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), a Centrist who has Voiced Grave concerns about the Medicaid Cuts Trump Signed into Law earlier this year.

Senate Republicans on Friday, Voted Down a Democratic Proposal to Fund the Government for One Mmonth and Permanently Extend Health Care Premium Subsidies that are due to Expire at the End of the year.

The Democrats’ Proposal, Unveiled by Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), on Wednesday, would have Restored nearly $1 trillion in Medicaid Spending Cuts and provided nearly $200 million to Beef-Up Security Protection for Members of Congress.

Government Funding is Due to Expire on Sept. 30th. Federal Departments and Agencies will be Forced to Curtail Operations, and Furlough Workers unless Congress Passes a Continuing Resolution in the next 11 days.
