The National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCRID) Director Demetre Daskalakis, has Resigned following the White House’s Dismissal of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Susan Monarez, who Refused to Step Down. Their Departures have fueled Concerns regarding the Politicization of Vaccine Policy and the Exclusion of Scientific Experts from Decision-Making. The White House Fired Monarez a month after Her Swearing-In, following Conflicting Statements from Health and Human Services (HHS) and Her Attorney about Her Status.
Daskalakis wrote, "Having worked in local and national public health for years, I have never experienced such radical non-transparency, nor have I seen such unskilled manipulation of data to achieve a political end rather than the good of the American people."
Daskalakis cited Conflicts with HHS over Vaccine Policy, Immunization Schedule Changes, and Communications, Claiming CDC Experts were Excluded from Briefings and HHS Materials Conflicted with CDC Analyses.
Daskalakis wrote, "I am unable to serve in an environment that treats CDC as a tool to generate policies and materials that do not reflect scientific reality and are designed to hurt rather than to improve the public’s health." He added, "The data analyses that supported this decision have never been shared with CDC despite my respectful requests to HHS and other leadership."
At least Four Senior CDC Officials, including Chief Medical Officer Debra Houry, have also Resigned. No Interim Leaders have been Named for their Divisions. Daskalakis Argued that Limited Transparency and Data handling have Eroded Vaccine Confidence. He Insisted that Expert Review should Guide Policy.
Murray said, "If there are any adults left in the White House, it’s well past time they face reality and fire RFK Jr. He is a dangerous man who is determined to abuse his authority to act on truly terrifying conspiracy theories and disinformation — leaving us unprepared for the next deadly pandemic and snuffing out potential cures while he’s at it."
