Newsmax to Pay Millions to Settle Dominion Defamation Lawsuit

The Conservative Cable Channel Newsmax has Agreed to Pay $67 million to Settle a Defamation Lawsuit Filed by the Voting Technology Company Dominion Voting Systems, over the Network’s Coverage of the 2020 Presidential Election, according to a Filing Friday with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Dominion Sued Newsmax in August 2021, Arguing that the Network “manufactured, endorsed, repeated, and broadcast, a series of verifiable false yet devastating lies about Dominion” that made it out to be Guilty in a “Colossal Fraud” to Steal the Election for Joe Biden (D). Dominion claimed that Newsmax did so to improve its Business Standing and Appeal to Viewers Disaffected with Fox News’ Coverage of the Election.

According to the Settlement, the Money will be Paid to Dominion in Three Installments over the next year and a half. The $67 million figure is notably Lower than the $787.5 million Paid by Fox News to Settle Dominion’s Lawsuit in the spring of 2023.

The Case was Scheduled to go to Trial in Delaware in April, but was Postponed over Scheduling issues. The Judge who would have Overseen the Newsmax Case, Superior Court Judge Eric M. Davis, also oversaw Dominion’s Case against Fox, which was Settled on the First Day of Trial. All along, Newsmax Contested Dominion’s Assertions and said its Hosts had merely covered Newsworthy Claims of Election Fraud made by Trump’s (R) Lawyers, including Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell.

Last fall, Newsmax settled another Lawsuit brought by a Voting Technology Company, Smartmatic, for an amount later Disclosed as $40 million, a few days before the Trial was set to begin.

Newsmax, which was founded by Trump Pal Christopher Ruddy, went Public this Spring, initially Spiking in Price before settling down. Newsmax Stock was up 5.6% to $12.75 a Share late Morning Monday. The Company currently has a Market Capitalization of more than $1 billion.

Had it not been Settled, the cCse would have been One of the First Testing Claims against Conservative Ttelevision Networks over their Coverage of the 2020 Election to actually reach Trial. Smartmatic, which is Suing Fox News, settled a Case with the Conservative Network One America News in 2024.

“We are pleased to have settled this matter,” a Spokesperson for Dominion told The Washington Post.

“Newsmax believed it was critically important for the American people to hear both sides of the election disputes that arose in 2020,” the Company said in a Statement. “We stand by our coverage as fair, balanced, and conducted within professional standards of journalism.”
