One of the Biggest Problems Kyiv has faced since Moscow Invaded Ukraine, is its Inability to hit back at Russian Targets with Force. Ukraine has Not had any Ballistic Missiles for most of the War, and its Allies have been Reluctant to provide these Key Weapons to Kyiv.
However, Ukraine’s Ballistic Missile Problems may soon be a thing of the past, if a recent Revelation from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is to be believed. Ukraine is set to make History with the Serial Production of its Domestically made Ballistic Missile. Known as the Sapsan, Ukraine’s Domestically produced Ballistic Missile has been in the works since at least March 2006, when Plans to Develop a New Ballistic Missile Program were discussed by the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council.
Development of a New Ballistic Missile began, but was put On-Hold in 2010, as a Result of Budgetary Restraints. However, Russian Aggression in 2014 Revitalized the Program, and by the time Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, the Sapsan was more than just a Concept. In August 2024, Ukraine carried out the First successful test of its Domestic Ballistic Missile, though it may have been used in 2023. Kyiv’s Sapsan Missile, which is also known as the Hrim-2, was reportedly Undergoing Operational testing in 2023. Defense Express reported that Russia claimed to have Shot Down the Missiles in March, April, and May of that year, though the Truth is still Unclear.
Regardless of the Sapsan’s Past Testing, the Missile has Finished its Combat Testing and is ready for the Battlefield. According to The Kyiv Independent, Reports indicated that the Sapsan was used to Hit a Russian Target at a range of 300 kilometers (186 miles).
On June 13th, Ukraine announced that the Sapsan would go into Mass Production, which is a Critical Step on Kyiv’s Journey to Develop its own Ballistic Missiles and a Critical Step in Increasing the Country’s Defense Capabilities, According to The Kyiv Independent.
"The very emergence of domestic ballistic missiles is a bold political statement, a big, fat middle finger to the Kremlin’s claims that Ukraine must be demilitarized," noted Defense Express Military Eexpert Ivan Kyrychevsky when Speaking with The Kyiv Independent.
Defense Express Reported that the Missile carries an approximately 480 kilogram (1,058 pound) Warhead.
