Stefanik’s UN Appointment Will Require Special Election

Elise Stefanik (R-NY, 21st District) was Elected last week to Her Sixth Term in the U.S. House of Representatives, in a District that encompasses a massive part of Upstate New York.

The latest version of New York’s 21st District includes parts of: Oneida, Jefferson, Montgomery and Saratoga Counties, and All of Lewis, St. Lawrence, Herkimer, Schoharie, Fulton, Hamilton, Franklin, Clinton, Essex, Warren, and Washington Counties. The District includes the City of Rome and the Tug Hill Region.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) will call a Special Election in accordance to the Timeline Mandated by State Law.

New York State Law requires the Governor to announce a Special Election within 10 Days, after Senate Approval, of the Congressional Vacancy.

Then, State Law requires the Special Election to happen within 70-80 Days of the Announcement. In New York, the Governor does Not have the Power to Fill the Vacancy with an Appointment. The Republican Party will pick the Candidates.

The biggest unanswered Question is when Rep. Stefanik plans to Resign Her Congressional Seat. The 118th Congress expires on January 3rd, 2025, immediately followed by the Sitting of the 119th Congress of which Stefanik has been Elected a Member.

Stefanik could be Sworn-In as Scheduled, awaiting for President-Elect Trump’s Inauguration January 20th, 2025, and further wait for U.S. Senate Confirmation of Her Appointment.

“I am honored to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter,” President-Elect Trump said in a Statement.

Stefanik Chairs the Republican Caucus of the U.S. House, a position She took over from former Congresswoman Liz Cheney, after the January 6th, 2021 Insurrection.
