Offshore Wind Turbines in the Gulf of Maine are One step closer to becoming a reality. The FederalGgovernment is Auctioning off Leases for Eight areas off the Coast of New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts, to create Wind projects.
Federal Officials said that if fully developed, the Energy produced there could Power more than 4.5 million Homes.
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management said avoiding Offshore Fishing Grounds, Sensitive Habitats and Shipping routes were all Priorities when choosing the Locations. The Leases also include requirements intended to create Good-Paying Jobs.
Sam Evans-Brown, of Clean Energy New Hampshire, said it will be some time before any Turbines are Pperating.
"We're not talking about wind turbines popping up in the Gulf of Maine overnight," He said. "This is going to be many years down the road. I would guess that ballpark numbers, it would be surprising to me if anything was built out in this Gulf of Maine lease area before 2030. But, hey, if any developers out there think they can do it faster, I'd love to be proven wrong on that."
He said New Hampshire could play a Key role in any Offshore Wind Projects. One way would be to play Host to Interconnection.
Revolution Wind has installed First Turbine for New multi-state Offshore Wind Farm.
"The power gets created out at sea and then has to come and plug into the grid somewhere, and there are at least two really good sites that you can plug in in New Hampshire," Evans-Brown said. "And that would result in an increased tax base and also lower electric rates."
