IA Abortion Law Could Start July 26th

Iowa’s New Abortion Law could take effect as soon as Friday, July 26th. The Law was On-Hold for nearly a year, until the Iowa Supreme Court Ruled last month, to let it take effect.

It would Restrict the Procedure when Fetal Cardiac Activity is Detected, typically around Six weeks into a Pregnancy. Doctors say that’s before many Patients know they’re Pregnant.

Ruth Richardson, CEO of Planned Parenthood North Central said once it takes effect, it will dramatically Reduce the number of Abortions in Iowa. “We’re estimating that around 97-98% of abortions would be banned,” Richardson said.

Richardson said Planned Parenthood will continue to provide Abortions in the narrow window set by the Law.

They’ll also be able to help Patients who come after the window get Care elsewhere. “Our patient navigators are going to be helping those patients travel across state lines in order to get access to the healthcare that they need,” Richardson said.

Richardson said Planned Parenthood is Expanding Operations at their Health Centers on State Lines. At their Mankato, Minnesota Location, they are Expanding their capacity to provide Medication Abortion.

In Omaha, Nebraska, the Provider is Expanding their footprint. “We have a 9,000 square foot expansion that is underway and it’s going to give us the ability to triple the number of patients that we can see, going from four exam rooms to 13,” Richardson said.

Kristi Judkins with "Iowa Right to Life" says the State has New Resources to help Families under the More Options for Maternal Support (MOMs), a Program Lawmakers revamped in this year’s Legislative Session.

It gives Funds to Anti-Abortion Pregnancy Resource Centers. “It will help with additional things, essential care needs like diapers and baby cribs and car seats and those other essentials that families need,” Judkins said. Iowa Lawmakers send Changes to MOMs Program to Gov. Reynolds’ (R) Desk.

While some Pregnancy Resource Centers offer Health services, they are Not Medically Licensed.

Judkins says another Option is Adoption. She also notes that Iowa has a “Safe Haven” Law, which allows Parents to give-up Custody of their Infants, without being Charged with Abandonment.

Planned Parenthood has asked the Iowa Supreme Court to Rehear the Case. If the Court Declines, the Case gets sent to a District Court Judge, who will decide when to Lift the Injunction on the Law. The Earliest that could happen is Friday, July 26th.

Governor Kim Reynolds claims this Law Represents what most Iowans want, since State Lawmakers Passed the Bill Twice. She says She’s glad the Court Upheld the Will-of-Voters.

Planned Parenthood Officials say they have No Plans to Close Locations or Lay-Off Staff. Officials say they Plan to continue to Offering their Normal offering of Services, such as Emergency Contraception, Annual Exams, and HIV Prevention.
