The Wisconsin Legislature has taken a Historic step toward Fairer Elections, by passing New Legislative Maps, that aim to Dismantle Republican Gerrymandering. In a move that signals a Shift away from Partisan Redrawing Districts, both the Senate and Assembly Voted to adopt Maps drawn by the Office of Governor Tony Evers (D).
The Decision follows a State Supreme Court Ruling, that branded the GOP Maps Unconstitutional, shaking up the Political landscape in a State known for its Gerrymandered Districts. Republicans, who have held a tight grip on the Legislature through favorable Maps faced a reckoning, when the State’s High Court, now with a left-leaning Mmajority, deemed their Maps a Violation of Constitutional requirements.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-63rd District), recognized the gravity of the moment, saying, “The legislature will be up for grabs,” and Conceded, “Pains me to say it, but Gov. Evers gets a huge win today.” This acknowledgment underscores the potential impact of the New Maps on future Electoral outcomes in Wisconsin.
The maneuvering behind the Legislative Passage of Evers’ Maps was Not without its drama.
Concerns arose among some Democrats about the GOP’s Intentions, suspecting a StrategicPploy that might lead to a Federal Court Challenge. State Senator Chris Larson (D-7th District, Milwaukee), expressed Distrust, stating, “I am voting no because I do not trust what you guys are up to.”
However, Speaker Vos downplayed further Legal action, preferring to focus on Campaigning and Voter Engagement rather than prolonged Court Disputes.
Despite some pushback, the New Maps, based on an Analysis by Marquette University, suggest that under Evers’ design, Democrats could have gained additional Seats in both the Assembly and Senate, if the Maps had been in effect during the 2022 Election. Still, the Republican Party is expected to retain its Majority in both Chambers, likely with reduced margins.
Wisconsin has long been a focal point in the National discussion over Gerrymandering, with its Legislative Maps serving as an egregious example of Partisan Manipulation.
The Approval of Governor Evers’ Maps, not only marks the End of a specific Gerrymandered design, but also represents a broader move toward Electoral Fairness, and a Responsive Legislative body.
Good-Government Groups and Fair Map Advocates have lauded the possibility of a Legislative Agreement, and the Wisconsin Fair Maps Coalition has pledged to continue Advocating for a Nonpartisan Body to oversee Future Redistricting processes.
