Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), announced His Support for the "Reproductive Freedom For All Act", marking a significant Bipartisan effort to Codify the Protections of Roe v. Wade into Federal Law.
The Act aims to Prevent States from imposing Undue Burdens on the Right to Pre-Viability Abortions while allowing certain Restrictions after Viability, based on Medical necessity.
According to Senator Manchin, the Act would:
- Prohibit State Regulations that impose an undue Burden on a Woman’s Access to Pre-Viability Abortions, while allowing States to enact Reasonable Restrictions on Post-Viability Abortions, provided that States Cannot Ban Abortions that are necessary to Protect the Life or Health of the Mother.
- Protect Access to Contraceptives.
- Preserve Conscience Protections Laws, ensuring that Medical Providers can Op-Out of participating in Services that Conflict with their Moral or Religious Beliefs.
- Introduces a Medical Judgment-based Definition of Viability.
- Focusing on the Fetus’s ability to Survive outside the Womb without specifying a Gestational age.
Sponsored by Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), and Co-Sponsored by Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Krysten Sinema (I-AZ), and Susan Collins (R-MA), the Bill represents a rare Bipartisan Initiative in today’s Polarized Political landscape.
The Act, represents a critical effort to Safeguard Abortion Rights and Access to Reproductive Health Care at the Federal Level, amidst growing State-Level Restrictions following the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
