The Biden-Harris Administration has announced a set of Executive Aactions, aimed at addressing the critical issue of Gun Violence, with a particular focus on encouraging Secure Storage of Firearms to prevent Children from accessing Guns. This move comes in response to the disturbingly high rates of School Shootings, Youth Suicides, and Accidental injuries due to Unsecured Guns in Homes.
The newly introduced Executive Order (EO) includes initiatives to improve Background Checks, increase Accountability within the Gun Industry, and provide Assistance to Communities that have been impacted by Gun Violence.
The U.S. Department of Education will play a Role in promoting Safe Firearm Storage. A Letter will be sent to School Principals emphasizing the importance of Safe Storage, and a Communications Template will be provided to engage with Parents, encouraging them to adopt Safe Firearm Storage Practices.
A significant number of Unintentional Shootings involving Children are linked to Unsecured Guns at Home. From 2003 to 2021, 1,262 Children were Killed by Unintentional Firearm Injury, underscoring the importance of Safe Storage in Preventing Harm.
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), is set to Release an extensive Guide on Safe Firearm Storage, offering Expertise on Storage Devices and Best Ppractices. This Guide is positioned as the most Comprehensive Resource on Safe Storage ever provided by the Federal Government.
The New Actions aim to address the connection between Unsecured Firearms at Home and School Shootings. Notably, 76% of School Shootings involve Guns from Students’ Homes, emphasizing the need for the Secure Firearm Storage.
The Executive Order directs Federal lLw Enforcement Aagencies, to accelerate Reporting of Ballistics Data, utilizing the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN) to catch Shooters. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of implementing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) to maximize Gun Safety Legislative Benefits.
The focus extends to Preventing Firearm-related Suicides among Children, with approximately 80% involving a Gun belonging to a Family Member. Safe Storage is identified as a Critical Measure to Reduce the Firearm Suicide rate among Children and Teens.
Over 1 million Firearms were Reported Stolen between 2017 and 2021. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) emphasizes a rising trend of Firearms Stolen from unattended Motor Vehicles, prompting the need for enhanced Storage Measures.
Acknowledging the lack of Coordinated Government Support, for Communities impacted by Mass Shootings, President Biden directs his Cabinet to propose mechanisms for federal assistance, aiming to address short- and long-term needs of survivors, victims’ families, First Responders, and affected Communities.
