With Democrats in charge of both Chambers of the Virginia General Assembly, New Gun Control Measures are a hot topic of Discussion.
On Monday, Jan. 22nd, the Senate Courts of Justice Committee advanced several Bills, including Ones to Ban Assault Weapons and High-Capacity Magazines, crack down on Ghost Guns, Guns that aren’t Detectable as a Firearm when screened, and institute a longer Waiting period to purchase a Gun.
“We understand that regulations save lives and states that have strong gun laws, the rates of gun death are much lower,” explained Lori Haas with the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions.
Haas’ Daughter was Injured in the 2007 Mass Shooting at Virginia Tech that killed 32 People. She said the proposed Measures to Ban aAsault Weapons and institute a Five-Day waiting period when purchasing a Gun, could be the most Impactful. “I think waiting periods are very integral to stopping impulsive acts of violence that include self-harm and violence towards others,” Haas said.
However, Second Amendment Advocates like Philip Van Cleave with the Virginia Citizens Defense League, say the Proposals Violate Citizens’ Constitutional Rights. “The Constitution is our founding document,” Van Cleave said. “If we ignore that, then we don’t really have the country that we think we have.”
Van Cleave added that the Bills will Penalize responsible Gun Owners for acts committed by Criminals. “If the most popular car for someone to use as a getaway car for robbing banks was a Camry, we wouldn’t want to take away Camry’s from everybody,” Van Cleave said.
He added that he’s hopeful Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R), will Veto any Gun Control Measures that get to his desk. In a Statement, Christian Martinez, a Spokesperson for the Governor’s Office, said the following:
“The Governor will review any legislation that comes to his desk, but as he reiterated during his State of the Commonwealth address, Virginia’s gun laws are already among the toughest in the nation. He’s asking the General Assembly members to hold accountable those criminals that commit crimes with guns by lengthening and making more severe the penalties in order to keep criminals off the streets.”
