EPA Stops AK Pebble Mine For Now

The Biden Administration, recently dealt a blow to the Massive and controversial Gold and Copper Mining Project in Bristol Bay, Alaska called the Pebble Mine. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has acted to Not only Block the Pebble Mine, but also Restrict future Mining of the Pebble Deposit.

This is a watershed moment and hard-fought Victory for the Yup'ik, Dena'ina, and Alutiiq Tribes, of Bristol Bay, and its 10 billion tons of Mining Waste, that would need to be stored, forever, at the Headwaters of the greatest Wild Salmon Fishery on the Planet.

Yet, despite its singular importance, we understand that EPA's Veto is not the End of the road, the Mining Company has threatened to Sue to Overturn the EPA decision.

The Fight for Bristol Bay will go on, and organizations are preparing to Defend the Agency's Veto in Court.

Thanks to steadfast Support and years of relentless Opposition, Mitsubishi, Anglo American, Rio Tinto, and First Quantum Minerals, all Abandoned the Pebble Mine.

In a rare show of Bipartisan Agreement, Agencies of the Biden, Obama, and the Trump Administrations, all took action to stop it.

Now the Biden Administration and EPA have listened to the Tribes, and millions of other Advocates, who have fought fiercely to protect Bristol Bay and the People whose lives, culture, and livelihoods, depend on its Pristine Waters and World Class runs of Wild Salmon.

EPA stressed the importance of Protecting this National Treasure, describing Bristol Bay as "an area of unparalleled ecological value" and a "globally significant ecological and cultural resource."

EPA is Safeguarding Bristol Bay by Prohibiting the Pebble Mine and Restricting Future Mining of the Pebble Deposit, in certain Headwaters of Bristol Bay.

This is only the 14th time since Congress enacted the Clean Water Act in 1970, that EPA has taken action like this.
