Former NYC Mayor Bloomberg Donates Millions For Charter Summer School Program

Former New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, will Donate millions of dollars to City Charter Schools, to create a Summer School program, helping Students overcome Educational Challenges resulting from the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Bloomberg’s Philanthropic Organization, will Fund the Bulk of a $50 million Initiative that aims to Pay for Publicly Funded, but Privately run Charter Schools, to develop a Free Camp and Remedial program this summer, for an estimated 25,000 Elementary and Middle School Students.

The New Initiative is separate from the City Education Department’s previously announced Summer Rising program, which is slated to enroll 110,000 City Kids in a combined School and Enrichment program. The City’s program is open to Students in traditional Public Schools and Charter Schools, while the New Bloomberg Initiative will be run by Charters for Kids enrolled in Charter Schools.

“This is a grant for the most in need, kids in charter schools who have been left behind, to give them some extra work in the charter schools,” Bloomberg said at a City Hall Press Conference. “The charter people thought that they would like to take a stab at helping their kids, and then be a role model for everybody.”

Bloomberg estimated he will cover roughly Two-Thirds of the $50 million. The rest will be covered by other Donors.

Roughly 240 Charter Schools Citywide are eligible to Apply for Funding from the Bloomberg Initiative entitled Summer Boost. Schools that Participate can either adopt a Premade Curriculum or propose their own Academic Plan.

The Program will Prioritize Kids who have Fallen furthest Behind, and seek to tackle Learning loss with “extra help and intensive instruction,” Bloomberg said.

New York City Mayor, Eric Adams (D) has touted the importance of Summer programming for City Kids and said the Bloomberg Initiative will Build on the City’s Summer Rising program and Summer Youth Employment program, which provides Jobs for older Teens and young Adults.

“It complements the work our city is already doing,” Adams said. “Our children need to have structured education throughout the entire year to catch up and to exceed.”

Bloomberg, who oversaw a Massive Expansion of Charter Schools in New York City during his Mayoralty, recently committed to spend $750 million of his Personal Fortune over the next Five years to financially support Charter Schools.

The $50 million Summer Boost initiative is separate from that Pledge, he said.
