AK Special Election Will Test New Top Four RCV Election System

Thanks to Richard Winger of Ballot Access News for this post.

Alaska's Congressman Don Young (R) died on March 18th. Alaska will hold a Special Election to fill the Vacancy on June 11th.

Under the New system created in November 2020, there are No Party Nominees.

Candidates file as Individuals, although the Party they are Registered in is listed on the Ballot.

The Top Four will run on August 16th, and in that Election, Ranked-Choice-Voting (RCV) will be used.

51 Candidates filed, Three withdrew, so now 48 will be on the Ballot:

- 21 Independents

- 16 Republicans

- 6 Democrats

- 3 Libertarians

- 1 Alaska Independence

- 1 American Independent

The Regular Process is a Top Four Nonpartisan Blanket Primary on August 16th, 2022, with a RCV General Election on November 8th, 2022.

On May 1, I learned that one of the 3 Libertarian candidates has changed his registration to "Nonpartisan", so there are now 22 independents running, and only two Libertarians.
