What's Next For NY Redistricting?

After the New York Legislature voted Down the new Independent Redistricting Commission’s Proposal on Monday, the Commission now has until Jan. 25 to take another stab at coming to a Compromise on New Lines.

Most might view that as a Long Shot.

Democratic and GOP Commissioners couldn’t come to an Agreement last week, as each draw Different Maps.

But the Top Republican Member, former State Sen. Jack Martins, says it’s possible, if Democrats are willing to come to the table.

“There’s plenty of time to put lines together,” said Martins, who said on Tuesday afternoon, that he had reached out to his Democratic Counterparts but not yet heard back.

“Let’s get back together. If there’s a concern that anybody has, let’s figure it out.”

But Martins also says that future Talks would be easier if the Legislature had provided Feedback about their Issues with the Maps, rather than simply Voting them down.

“It would have been nice if they had given us some sense, so that we could have tried to work through the concerns they may have had apart from incumbency.”
