After a Series of Mishaps and Blunders at the New York City Board of Elections (NYCBOE), State Lawmakers say they will hold a Series of Hearings looking at how the NYCBOE can be Reformed.
After the Ranked-Choice-Voting (RCV), June 22nd Primary, The NYCBOE Released a Count of In-Person Ballots in the Democratic Primary.
However, in that Count were 135,000 Test Ballots and the NYCBOE was forced to Rescind the Results and Issue New Results, after Removing the Test Bsllots, within a few hours.
Following the Blunder, Multiple Lawmakers and Mayoral Candidates called for Reforms.
Though, Upgrading the Agency has proved easier said than done, according to State Sen, Zellnor Myrie (D-20th District).
“Everything is on the table, and everything should be on the table,” he said.
He has Announced a Series of Hearings, that will start in the City and expand across the State looking at Local Election Boards and potential Reforms.
“This is something that is not unique to the city of New York and in fact there are many challenges and issues with boards of elections all across the state,” Myrie said.
The State Senator says he also Plans to go directly to New York Voters to hear what they would like to see done.
Another Consistent Roadblock, over the years, has been the fact that Lawmakers tend to have Close Ties to those In-Charge of Election Boards: the Local Party Bosses.
Though, Myrie hopes they'll act in the name of Democracy.
“It is a difficult topic to tackle it is one that is politically fraught in some instances but, it's something that is worthwhile,” he said.
The State Assembly already has another Hearing planned, for Next Week, looking at the Roll-Out of RCV.
