David Imamura, currently Democratic District Leader for the Village of Irvington, has been Named Chair of The State’s Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC).
With the naming of the New Chair, the pieces are coming together, that will ultimately determine the Political Maps of New York State for the Next Decade.
The IRC was designed to be as Politically Neutral as possible, but the Process will almost certainly get more Contentious as its work nears completion next Fall.
New York’s IRC has 10 Members, with Eight coming from the Two Major Parties, who then Chose the other Two from Smaller Parties.
The Commission is supposed to Produce a Proposed District Map by Sept. 15th, 2021, to be Approved by the Legislature on Jan 1st, 2022.
The 2020 Census Results mean that New York State is Losing One of its Current 27 House Seats, by 85 Residents. But until the Census gives New York the Final District Numbers, they will Not know where the Loss is.
One of the Reasons for the Loss, the Census was Cut Short due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.
As in the game of Musical Chairs, in the Final round, someone will be left without a Seat.
