The Presidential Records Act Trump is Ignoring

With Biden’s Victory, the Country now turns its Attention to the Transition of Power between Administrations, with hopes that Trump with a History of Secrecy won’t once again try to Avoid taking Responsibility for his Past Actions.

Congress Passed the Presidential Records Act, 42 years ago. to Protect against this.

The Law requires the Preservation of Documents to provide the Public with an Accurate Historical Account of an Administration and entrusts the National Archives and Records Association (NARA) with carrying out the Process alongside the White House.

However, Trump has shown No Regard for the Law, consistently Deleting Tweets and Tearing-Up Official Documents that his Team had to Tape back together.

Trump isn’t alone in these Actions either, as Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, Refused to Recover and Preserve Records from the President’s Meeting with Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Ivanka Trump used a Personal Email Account for Official White House Business.

Without Access to the Presidential Records, the Public will have No ability to Hold its most Visible Leaders Accountable for their Actions, widening the Lack of Trust between Americans and our Elected Officials.

The Open Government Coalition continues to urge NARA to be Active and Persistent in Preserving the Records, and to Report any Difficulties they are Experiencing with the White House to Congress.

So far, they have been Silent on the Steps they are taking, with the Oval Office, to Complete this Crucial Task.

As Freedom of Information Act Litigator, Anne Weismann, noted in a Recent Opinion Article, whether Trump is Proud of or Ashamed of his Record, he Owes it to the American People to Preserve Evidence of it so we can Judge for Ourselves.

Destroying or Stealing Documents belonging to the United States Government is a Crime. Destroying or Stealing Documents to Cover-Up another Crime, or Activity that may be under Investigation, is also a Crime. Lying about what happened to Missing Documents is yet another Crime. A Departing Federal Official may take Personal Property from the Office but No More, that includes perhaps some Family Photos, and of course, that Red Cap. But Everything else Stays where it is. Anyone who Doesn’t Understand that, could End-Up Staying with the Government a Lot Longer than Anticipated or Desired, with a Federal Crime Case.
