After the House of Representatives introduced a Bill, H.R.5221 - 100% Clean Economy Act of 2019, to Transition the U.S. to 100% Clean Energy by 2050, last November, the Senate today introduced a Bill that will help the U.S. Transition to Net-Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions by No Later than 2050.
The Clean Economy Act of 2020, sponsored by Senator Tom Carper (D-DE), would Slash the Dangerous Pollution that's Driving us toward Climate Catastrophe, steer us toward Cleaner, Smarter ways to Power our Future, and Shield our Communities and Children from a World of Rising Seas, Widening Deserts, Raging Wildfires, Floods, and Storms.
Carper, the Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, introduced the New “Clean Economy Act”, touting it as a way to give the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other Federal Officials the Tools needed to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions while also Supporting Green Technologies and Jobs.
“As an industrial union and member of the BlueGreen Alliance, we recognized over 50 years ago that climate change would be one of the greatest challenges of our time and really any policy to address it must also address the growing crisis of economic inequality,” said Roxanne Brown, United Steelworkers Vice President At Large, in her Support of the Bill.
The Clean Economy Act directs the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to Establish and Implement a Plan to put the Nation on a Path to achieve Net-Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2050. That means drastically Reducing Climate-Changing Pollution, including Carbon and Methane Emissions from Fossil Fuels, Industrial Chemicals, and other Sources.
The Bill Mandates that the EPA's Plan must Prioritize Public Health, Lower Costs, Economic Growth, Climate-Resilient Infrastructure Investments, and Support for a Strong Labor Workforce and Front Line Communities. The Act also Requires other Federal Agencies to Implement Policies that help achieve these Goals.
The Timing of the Bill is Critical: Some World Leaders Failed to take Strong, Urgent Action, to Combat the Climate Crisis when they met at the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Madrid late last year, Ignoring Scientific Reports, Worsening Evidence of Climate Destruction, and Demands from Millions of Young People, to Protect their Future.
This Bill sends a Message that the Senate Backs a Strong National Response to a Global Threat, even as the Trump Administration and its Allies in the Dirty Fossil Fuel Industry prepare to Fight Tooth and Nail to Tear this Bill Down so they can Continue to Drill in our Public Lands and Waters, and Pollute with Impunity.
