States that Use Run-Offs in Federal Election and RCV


The following States use Federal Run-Off Elections, that could save their Citizens and Candidates Money and Time if they used Ranked-Choice Voting (RCV).

Alabama - 3/3 and Run-Off 3/31

For Military and Overseas Voters in Runoffs: By Agreement with a Federal Court, used in Special Election for U.S. House, 2013; became Law for All Federal Primary Runoffs in 2015.

Arizona - 3/3 and Run-Off 3/31

Georgia - 5/19 and Run-Off 7/21

SB 98: Would Authorize the use of RCV for Runoffs by Overseas Citizens and Military Personnel and to provide for Special Absentee Ballots for such purpose. Bill will Not Advance this Session

Mississippi - 3/10 and Run-Off 3/31

For Military and Overseas Voters in Runoffs: Adopted in 2014 for use in Federal Runoffs.

Oklahoma - 6/30 and Run-Off 8/25

South Carolina - 6/9 and Run-Off 6/23

For Military and Overseas Voters in Runoffs: For Congressional Run-Offs.

South Dakota - 6/2 and Run-Off 8/11

Texas - 5/3 and Run-Off 5/26

- HB 3514: Relating to use of Preferential Voting in certain Elections Bill will Not Advance this Session.

- HB 2010: Relating to Preferential Voting in a Primary Election Bill will Not Advance this Session.
