State Bills Requiring Tax Return for Presidential Ballot Access Grows

A Number of Republican Party Officials and Trump Advisers are Studying a Trend that is starting to received attention, could pose a jarring Dilemma for the President Trump.

Will Trump have to choose between Releasing his Tax Returns and having his Name on the Ballot in some States for the 2020 Election?

Illinois' State Senate recently Passed a Bill that would require People Running for President or Vice President to Disclose their Tax Returns from the Past years, Five years in Illinois.

Illinois is Not Alone.

As of February 20th, 2017, Legislators in 18 States have introduced Bills:

Arizona
California
Connecticut
Hawaii
Illinois
Iowa
Kansas
Maryland
Minnesota
New Jersey
New Mexico
New York
Oregon
Pennsylvania
Rhode Island
Tennessee
Vermont
Virginia

These Bills require Future Presidential Candidates to Disclose Income Tax Returns in Order to be Placed on the General Election Ballot.

But None of these Bills have been Signed into Law.

But it seems possible, even likely, that at least One Blue State might put it in Place.

Given Trump's Determination so far to keep his Taxes Hidden, it's not crazy to imagine that he'd rather Not be on the Ballot in a State he's certain to Lose than turn over his Taxes.

Although States have the Authority to Administer Presidential Elections, it is the Constitution that clearly Outlines the current Qualifications for the Presidency.

The Criteria include being a Natural-Born Citizen, at least 35 years old, and a Resident of the U.S. for the past 14 years.

The possible Addition of a New Criteria established by a State would surely face Court Battles.

The Supreme Court has previously Ruled that neither States nor the Federal Government can Create Additional Qualifications for Members of Congress, and some Legal Experts believe that would likely Extend to the President of the United States.

So it will take the Supreme Court to Decide this Issue, if a Lower Court agrees with a State's Bill.
