Term Limits Convention Update

34 States Can Bypass Congress & Call the Term Limits Convention!

The U.S. Constitution gives States the Power to Bypass Congress, come together in a Convention and Propose a Congressional Term Limits Amendment.

To make it happen, 34 State Legislatures must Pass Applications for a Congressional Term Limits Convention or for a Convention that doesn’t Rule Out Term Limits.

Now, here is where it gets a bit Complicated. The States don’t always Pass the Exact Same Legislation.

So, today there are States that have Passed USTL’s “Term Limits Only” Legislation, States that have Passed Convention Calls that include Term Limits as well as other Issues, and States that that have Passed Legislation that doesn’t Exclude considering Term Limits.

Three States: Alabama, Florida, and Missouri have Passed USTL’s Applications Specific to the Single Topic of Term Limits.

Eleven States have Passed Term Limits Specific Language as Part of a Multi-Subject Initiative:

Alabama
Arkansas
Arizona
Georgia
Indiana
Iowa
Louisiana
North Dakota
Oklahoma
Utah

Thirteen States have Passed Inclusive Article V Applications, meaning they Approved Convention Resolutions that could Include Term Limits:

Colorado
Illinois
Iowa
Kansas
Kentucky
Nebraska
New Jersey
New York
North Carolina
Oregon
Texas
Washington
Wisconsin

Based on One Legal Interpretation that brings the Total Term Limits Convention Applications up to Twenty-Seven States.

However, to Eliminate All Legal uncertainly and positively Impose Term Limits on the House and Senate, USTL is fighting to Pass our Term Limits Convention, Only Legislation. in Thirty-Four States.

U.S. Term Limits is working with New York State Senator Joseph Griffo (D-47th District) to put Term Limits on Congress. He just filed B796, Single Topic Term Limit Bill in the NY Senate, a Resolution for a National Term Limits Amendment Proposal for the Convention.

"Imposing term limits, which I have championed since I was first elected to the New York State Senate, will regularly shake up the makeup of government and will reinvigorate the legislative process by bringing in new faces and fresh ideas," said Sen. Griffo. "I am hopeful that the resolution I sponsored in the New York State Senate will spur action and will fundamentally and dramatically change the culture of our government," he added.
