NM Legislative Hearing on Semi-Closed Primaries

Thanks to Richard Winger of Ballot Access News for this post.

On Tuesday, January 29th, the New Mexico House Consumer & Public Affairs Committee will hear HB 93.

Sponsors:

Representative Daymon Ely (D-23rd district)

Representative Natalie Figueroa (D-30th District)

Representative Joy Garratt (D-29th District)

Representative Melanie Stansbury (D-28th District)

This Bill lets Independents, and Members of Unqualified Parties, vote in any Ballot Qualified Party’s Primary.

It is thus similar to Primaries in Arizona and Colorado, which are termed Semi-Closed Primaries.

If the Bill passes that Committee, then it must also Pass the State Government, Elections & Indian Affairs Committee, and then the Judiciary Committee.

Update
On January 29th, the New Mexico House Consumer & Public Affairs Committee passed HB 93 by 3-2, with Democrats in Favor and Republicans Opposed. Now the Bill goes to the House State Government, Elections and Indian Affairs Committee.
