Trump Targets Vietnam War Refuges for Deportation

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) met with Vietnamese Government Officials to discuss Drastic, Cruel Changes to the Terms of a 2008 Agreement that Governs the Deportation of individuals to Vietnam.

The U.S.-Vietnam Repatriation Agreement does Not permit Vietnamese Immigrants who Arrived in the U.S. before July 12th, 1995 to be Deported. It also Requires that Vietnam and the U.S. take into Account family Unity and other Humanitarian Factors when considering Deportation.

The Trump Administration attempted to Ignore this Agreement earlier this year and was Forced to Reverse Course.

Altering the Current U.S.-Vietnam Repatriation Agreement could potentially put more than 8,500 People at Risk for Deportation. Many of these Folks came to the U.S. as Refugees, fleeing War and Persecution, and have been Living here and Building their Lives here for Decades.

The Trump Administration has Prioritized Harsh Immigration and Asylum Restrictions, and has chosen to Disregard the Agreement and Aggressively Push to End its Humanitarian Protections. At the same time, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has Imprisoned Hundreds of Vietnamese Immigrants in Detention Prisons across the Country, despite not being able to Deport many of them.

The Vietnamese Anti-Deportation Network and Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARAC) will be Delivering Petition Signatures next week.
